Meet : https://maps.app.goo.gl/koUNvPYruCPq7mct7
Details :
Approx 2 hours No SRT but there is a scramble up a steep slope, a bit of slithering around inside and a lot of ladders to climb out, only general fitness required. A copper mine first documented as Wheal Rock in 1750, renamed United Hills in 1809, and later as Tywarnhayle. From 1907 it was used as London's Royal School of Mines (RSM) training mine, specialising in surveying and timber preservation. There are several surviving engine houses. At SW 6975 4726 is Taylor's pump engine house with a detached stack. The building housed a 58-inch diameter wooden beam engine, the last to be built in Cornwall. It pumped James' Shaft by 350 metres of flat rods. Also present at SW 6999 4722 is John's pump engine house which was built in 1861 to house a 70-inch diameter engine. The engine was moved to Wheal Uny in 1864. Remains of the world's first commercial froth flotation plant, comprising concrete walls, loadings, a tank and a chimney, are situated at SW 70154709. This was used in 1906 when the spoil heaps were reworked for copper. Surviving features to the east of Union Hill copper mine, centred on St John's Shaft include many shafts and adits, one with a good portal, connected by roadways and tramways.

Most of the mine is straightforward walking with just a few small crawls, climbs or ladders. Large modern mine mainly Tin and Wolfram, there are old mens' workings to be found off the now large drives formed when the mine was reworked mainly for its Wolfram supply from 1940 – 1944. During this period it produced 200 tons of tin and 300 tons of Wolfram. When parking, make sure not to go through the open gate.

ULUa - Wheal Luna
Date : 30/06/2024 Time : 10:30 - 15:30Pat Moret
Meet : https://maps.app.goo.gl/uevZ6LMjbxti2MCN6
Details :
The trip, which passes through stopes on two different levels, should take about 4 hours. Participants will need to crawl in multiple sections and descend/ascend a 15m pitch which features a deviation. There are also two sections that require the use of cows tails. I would recommend the use of knee pads and gloves as this trip has a "caving" feel to it. PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A FULL SRT KIT AND BE COMPETENT AND EXPERIENCED IN ITS USE. Wheal Luna is a very early example of an open cast tin mine in the coastal village of St Agnes. Overlooking the remains of the old harbour, very little information remains of this old workings. First records of this mine date from 1528, documented as Whele Linna or Wheal Linna. The mine was working in 1724 and 1782, although the tin bounds were often split between several owners. At some point it was very likely amalgamated as part of Polberro.

UPO - Polberro
Date : 30/06/2024 Time : 11:00 - 16:00Tim Clarke
Meet : Meeting point is St Agnes Sports Club TR5 0SS https://maps.app.goo.gl/SoNSk8cHDUzXg9yq7
Details :
Need SRT kit. The trip gives access to a classic Cornish cliff mine and leat system which includes a 1700s date carving and water wheel pit. You will be required to negotiate airy, protected, cliff paths on a 60m high cliff. The paths are followed by a simple 15m descent/ascent still on the cliff face. The mine is then accessed by a portal which leads into stopping and other mining features. An older section of the mine is then accessed via a low crawl and U-bend obstacle which has to be passed in both directions. This section should not be tried by the XL or the claustrophobic.

UWG - Wheal Gorland
Date : 01/07/2024 Time : 11:00 - 16:00Tim Clarke
Meet : Meeting point is Wheal Gorland Road at the pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/stEn2xfjvGcWpkAi6
Details :
SRT kit and full competence required. Access/egress is made by 55m of awkward timber ladders some of which must be bypassed using SRT due to their condition. The ladder way is protected by a regularly anchored rope which allows a back up device ,such as shunt/rocker/ASAP, to run along. Once the ladder way is passed a huge stope is met which can be further explored using cows tails and SRT techniques . The stope has 1980s timber walkways of questionable stability so cows tails must be used whilst crossing these structures. Total depth to water is 90m at which point submerged pit work is visible. The mine is a “dry” trip but one particular optional section will involve wet underpants.
