THE VENUE - 2025
Link to conference mapConference venue
The main venue for the lectures and social events is the Nant Conwy Rugby Football Club, alongside the B5106 road (Conwy to Betws-y-Coed). We will have the use of the new, extended clubhouse opened in 2011. Catering will be mainly provided by the Rugby Club and their building can accommodate up to 120 for a sit-down meal. They also have shower and changing rooms which mean that we will not have to make use of portable facilities. Camping is on the grounds of the Club .
The venue has been chosen to be central in the area and, hopefully, travel to sites of surface and underground visits should not take too long. Almost directly across the B-road past the site is the Gwydyr forest which is home to many mines including the more recently worked Park Mine. These can be found described in the series of books written by John Bennett and Rob Vernon titled "Mines of the Gwydyr Forest". Go to the east and north a bit along the coast roads and you will find Halkyn Mountain, home of lead and limestone mines and the Milwr Tunnel that more or less led to the dewatering of the river Allyn. Cris Ebbs wrote about these in "The Milwr Tunnel". East and south takes you to a belt of slate mines such as Moelferna and Cambrian all described in Alun Richards "A Gazeteer of the Welsh Slate Industry". Heading north down the Conwy Valley leads to Llandudno where there are Bronze Age copper mines. Head west and north and you can cross into Anglesey with the famous Parys Mountain with Parys and Mona Mines. There are other mines in Anglesey which itself is a fascinating geological site. South west leads to the slate working area of Ffestiniog and Harlech. Take a full day out and you can travel to the Llyn peninsular with Abersoch at its end and a selection of lead and manganese mines (John Bennett and Rob Vernon "The Metal Mines of Llanengan").
